【Midnight in Paris】

Nostalgia is denial - denial of the painful present ..... The name for this denial is golden age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in. It's a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present.
I was so astonished by the remark on nostalgia in Woody Allen's new film 【Midnight in Paris】 (starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams). To some extent, I have lived in the past, like Gil (played by Wilson) in the movie who thinks he would be happier if he lived in a different time. somehow have had obsession with the 90s and have been reluctant to move on and grow up ever since the day of college graduation. To be more exact, I think that my spirit always lags a few years behind the present time. I was not aware of why and how my mind behaved in this way until the remark in the film waked me up. 
Sometimes those good old times are not as good as they feel like. They seem to be so good only because they have passed and we don't have to deal with them anymore.

[The West Wing] Josh's Confession to Amy

今天突然想起【The West Wing】裡面很喜歡的一段。

Oh Yeah, Babe!

Should I say this was an accomplishing week?

For one (and very trivial one compared to the next), I finally got up in time this morning to have a "breakfast" at Portage Bay around 11am, right before their breakfast menu ended. The quarterly mission accomplished (a goal set up at the beginning of the quarter). For the other, as a longtime TV junkie and a talk-show lover, I got to see Conan O'Brien's live tour in Seattle and hi5'd with him (oh yeah, my second celebrity hand) this Monday! More than a stand-up comedy as I originally expected, it was more like a variety concert with the Seattle-established rock band Pearl Jam showing up and crashing the crowd. My favorite piece and moment of the entire show was Conan's singing and interpretation of "I Will Survive"(*1), the song which was virtually the highlight of my (how could I say ...) state of mind. It was also a great song for desperate jogging by the way. The time and money spent on the ticket were totally worth it. (The ticket price, though not cheap, was not a big deal compared to other performances. As for the time, while the show had been sold out at the time I was aware of the tour, my constant effort at surveying ebay, Ticketmaster and some other second-hand ticket websites eventually brought me a seat at the centered orchestra, the 5th row from the stage! At the original price! Closer to the stage than ever expected!)

Side note: Another thing done this week, research-wise, was the seemingly reasonable results. Though there were some hidden flaws to be fixed. God bless me.

Unexpected Obsession

The first time I watched the 2006 movie【The Lake House】 was like two years ago, the result of random channel switching. When turning to HBO, my eyes were immediately attracted to the postcard-like scenes and dreamy dialog and music. Last weekend, random internet surfing led me to rewatch this movie again. And about four more times after that. An unexpected obsession.

Somebody told me this movie was adapted from a Korean movie. Not a big fan of Korean movies, I am not going to do the comparison. Not a big fan of Sci-Fi, the technical inconsistency of time travel part doesn't bother me at all. (I didn't even perceive those as inconsistencies as suggested by some reviews. Everything works just perfectly for me.) What I see is ... modern and classic beauty of Chicago, and amazing chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, though they don't share many scenes together. Chemistry comes out with no reason. Some people seem meant to be paired but some are just discordant (Like Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart in 【Love Happens】, the worst screen couple ever!)

The main message the movie tries to convey might be the spirit of soul mates. Don't settle for anyone unless he or she is the one. It's worth waiting. This is the ideal scenario though. The movie also raises the question: What if there is no one there waiting for you? The time and faith could be in vain. Anyway, life always works in a mysterious way. And there is only one single choice at a time. We'll never know what is gonna happen unless we proceed.

Romantic-Comedy Marathon

算了算發現這學期看了好多電影,且全部都是 Romantic Comedy,以前只會偶爾看一兩部這種浪漫喜劇,最近把平常一年的量都看完了。主要原因是現在完全無法看需要花腦筋的劇情片,這種浪漫喜劇 no-brainer 實為最佳娛樂消遣。

八月看了【Adam】【The Time Traveler's Wife】【500 Days of Summer】
九月看了【The Proposal】
十月看了【Before Sunrise】【Before Sunset】【Bribe Wars】【Ugly Truth】
十一月看了【Made of Honor】【Four Christmases】【27 Dresses】【13 Going On 30】

就我最近的 mood,其實【The Time Traveler's Wife】都稍嫌嚴肅(這部應該算劇情片,不算喜劇),最好就是像【Ugly Truth】這種好笑的,或是像【500 Days of Summer】這種輕鬆小品, more cheerful。比起去年同時期熱衷的政治片(見舊戲新癮),今年整個腦力嚴重退化(*1)

近期出的浪漫喜劇都看完了,就開始看一些舊片,剛剛重新看了 【Serendipity】,明明記得大二在清大禮堂看過,但對劇情完全沒有半點印象,只記得男主角是約翰庫薩克,還有那位怪怪的百貨公司店員。不知道為什麼當初看時並沒有留下很深刻的感受。

想想自己也挺誇張,明明有做不完的事,一學期十週還沒過完,就看了超過十部電影,再加上第五季【Grey's Anatomy】也被我全部補完至第六季最新一集,【How I Met Your Mother】、【The Big Bang Theory】也全部趕上。

【Grey's Anatomy】第六季不知道是不是順應時事,反應西雅圖近況,每集都是打雷下大雨的。星期四才從雨中走回家,一打開電視又開始閃電打雷的。抱怨歸抱怨,我還是看得相當開心,很喜歡一個新角色小兒科醫生 Arizona。

Addiction ‧ Indulgence

Recent articles show that Multitasking, Internet Addiction, and Internet Seeking could be dangerous and harmful to our brains. I was terrified. I have exactly same symptoms as described. "Searching for information you don't even care about", "chatting via instant messaging while checking email and surfing the Web", and "being anxious without Internet". Those are pretty much my daily life. (In some sense those articles were kind of entertaining while I was being terrified.)

In one episode of 【Grey's Anatomy】 about addiction, a remark goes like this
Bad habit comes easily but hard to be kicked away.
I think the hardest part of kicking a habit is wanting to kick it. I mean, we get addicted for a reason, right?
They say you don't kick the habit until you hit rock bottom. But how do you know when you are there?
Indeed.

Addiction is bad. But indulging oneself in an addiction is even worse.

This Week's Agenda

The agenda for this week is, again, work work work. A never fulfilled routine but still need-to-be-made agenda.

One different thing this week though. Here it is: If I work hard (defined by myself) for a couple of days in a row, I can take one weekday off for a movie marathon. I am going to see The Time Traveler's Wife, (500) Days of Summer, and Star Trek. Maybe not Star Trek, the theater I want to go doesn't have Star Trek anymore. I'll find another one to fill in.

My reward seems too big for tiny little effort. But whatever.

戰況空前

暑假看了很多影集,有的是新開發的,有的是之前看一半沒追上的,如果以季為單位,不分是哪部影集,我應該看了五季以上,換算成集數,應該超過百...。

算一算,九月一開學我應該會很忙,不是因為要教一門新的課,也不是因為論文要趕進度,而是現在趕上進度要和電視同步收看的影集包括
1. The Big Bang Theory (Season 3)
2. How I Met Your Mother (Season 5)
3. Brothers and Sisters (Season 4)
4. Grey's Anatomy (Season 6)
5. Scrubs (目前還在Season 7,還差一點才會趕上秋季的Season 9)

還好現在電視公司都會把剛撥完的影集放到網站上,不然我每晚光握著遙控等著時間到就夠了。

事實再次證明,越忙的時候越有空做閒雜事,兩年多前閒閒沒事的時候,花了一整年才把【The West Wing】七季看完,而以上1、2、4和5都是今年才開始看的。

Summer Movies

看了幾部暑假電影預告片,滿多片都想看,像【Up】、【The Time Traveler's Wife】等的。炎炎夏天最適合的活動就是去電影院吹冷氣耗上一天。

昨天看了【Confessions of a Shopaholic】,覺得 Hugh Dancy 真的好可愛,於是就去搜了一下他的其他電影,發現他最近有部【Adam】,七月底會上映,其實前幾天在西雅圖國際影展有撥,可惜已經結束了。他在【Adam】裡面演一個有 Asperger Syndrom(好像是自閉症的一種) 社交障礙的科學家,裡面好多情節都好像【The Big Bang Theory】哦,只是男主角稍微憂鬱了一點。Hugh Dancy 演呆呆的樣子也挺像的,很有 Forrest Gump 的味道。



預告片裡不覺得他有什麼自閉症,只是比較 socially inept 一點。還滿期待看這部的。

【Frost Nixon】

這幾天【Frost Nixon】 舞台劇在西雅圖 Paramount Theater 上演,看了週六下午兩點的那一場,很久以前 internet pre-sale 的時候就買了張 $19.77 (因為事件發生在1977年所以用這個數字來特價)座位在很前排偏左,那時還自以為賺到,後來因為票賣的不好,所以晚一點的時候發現 $19.77 居然可以買到中間的座位覺得很嘔,不過沒關係,最後上演燈一關我就自己移位到前面,不過主要是我原本座位隔壁坐了一個很mean的老太太。

除了之前去紐約時買到特價票坐過一樓 Orchestra 前排,在西雅圖看舞台劇音樂劇通常前排都很貴,所以都坐滿後面的,或是坐樓上balcony,這次坐的這位子很棒,覺得演員都在眼前,也還好坐那麼前面不然我應該很多台詞會漏聽。

原本一直很擔心會無法follow這種純粹用文字對話鋪陳的劇,雖然對水門案大致上了解,但覺得去看之前好像應該看一下原始 interview,在圖書館預約了 PBS interview 紀錄片,但最近實在很忙沒有空看。不過看完之後發現,經過多部 Oliver Stone 交引纏繞瘋狂使用倒序的非線性政治史實片之後發現沒有這個問題,只有一個故事線很容易follow,唯一的問題是我可能被 Stone 養大胃口,會覺得太平鋪直敘好像少了點美感。

這部舞台劇少了份嚴肅,多了些喜感,看了之後不會有什麼觸動內心的震撼,反而很多橋段只有會心的一笑(但其實我期待要有些震撼啊~ 我為了震撼才花錢買票的啊) 。演 Nixon 的 Stacy Keach 演技很好,但我覺得實在有點醜化 Nixon 太多,光就 Nixon 這個角色,我還是偏好 Anthony Hopkins,雖然他也把 Nixon演得很不堪,但比較琢墨在心境(例如被白宮錄音帶搞得精神崩潰),而不是外在的揶揄。Stacy Keach 演的 Nixon太有喜感,很難讓我覺得他經過水門案之後有任何的創傷,總覺得他被 interview 的時候看起來還是很開心,不過舞台劇跟電影本來就不能相提並論,舞台劇不誇張點很難表現出什麼,像電影版 Frost/Nixon 就嚴肅很多,雖然台詞都一樣,但就一點也不覺得好笑,Nixon 也有比較多心境上的表現。不過總結還是我被 Stone 洗腦了,沒辦法。

這個舞台劇我反而對演 Frost 媒體團隊裡面的一個 Tim Reston 留下比較多印象,他同時也在旁白這整個故事 他一副就是很熱血(他很像 【The West Wing】 裡頭的 Sam Seaborn) 硬是要 Frost 要逼 Nixon 承認他 abuse power 等的,Frost 本身提問也並不犀利,要不是 Tim 他也很難找到足夠的證據在最後一場以水門案為主題的 interview 問出什麼驚人的問題 。不過我好像不應該對這部分抱怨太多,因為這並不是一個「劇情」而是一個實際發生的事。

【Scrubs】

影集 【Scrubs】 是我近期的心靈良伴。

這部戲從2001年開撥,記得剛來美國前兩年的時候,常會再轉台時偶爾看個一兩集,向來喜歡有獨白的影集(像一開始會被慾望城市吸引也是因為喜歡 Carrie 的獨白),這部影集也有由主角實習醫生 JD 的獨白,那時雖然只有零碎看個幾集,但對裡頭的人物和情節有異常的熟悉感(像有些影集就必須 warm up 好一陣子才會進入狀況懂得裡頭的笑點),深得我心,也許那時候剛進研究所剛到異地,壓力大,和劇裡實習醫生的處境,得到很多共鳴。

雖然對這部影集一見如故,但不知道為什麼一直沒有機會重頭開始完整看起,和影集之間好像也需要一些緣分,有時候即使影集好看很吸引人但在錯誤的時間點出現,卻也無緣。今年春假某個巧合之下開始重頭看起,一看之後就一發不可收拾,目前看到第六季。很多影集伴我度過不同的時間點,像 【The West Wing】 陪我度過第三年無所事事時的時光,【Felicity】和民主黨總統黨內初選陪我走過徬徨的第四年,當再次看到這齣劇或相關的事物,就回憶起當時的情形。

有的人可能覺得【Scrubs】是部搞笑劇,裡頭的主角 JD 常和 Ally McBeal 一樣愛幻想,但這部影集最吸引我的地方,是前兩季這群主角還是實習醫生時,他們 suffer 之下的心境和抉擇。人家說,Pain is Inevitable; Suffering is Optional。記得有一集也是實習醫生的女主角 Elliot 很喜歡一個交往對象,但因為實習醫生工作量和壓力大,她迫於無奈必須放棄這段感情,此時 JD 的獨白 "You know, when you start med school they warn you that you're gonna have to make sacrifices. Like giving up something you really want now for something you've wanted your whole life." 。

感性之外,這個劇也很多搞笑的地方,這齣劇最有名的一集 "The Musical",整集搞得像部音樂劇,真的非常有創意,聽說有 AvenueQ 的劇組人員參與製作,難怪有幾首歌聽起來似曾相似。其中最最最好笑的是 JD 和 Turk 這對活寶對唱 Guy Love。看完這集之後,我又重複看 Guy Love 的 video 數次,每看必狂笑,百笑不厭,實可媲美六人行經典的幾集。

Movies in the Winter Break


最近假期上映了不少電影,我也應景到電影院看了幾部聖誕節檔,布萊德彼特的【The Curious Case of Benjamin Button】、金凱瑞的【Yes Man】,還有意外看了李奧納多和凱特溫斯蕾的【Revolutionary Road】。

Benjamin Button 裡面布萊得彼特演一個一生出來就八十幾歲的老人,然後越長越年輕,一生是倒著過的,主軸就是他這奇異的人生旅程,很多地方有【阿甘正傳】的味道,就故事性或傳奇性而言,稍嫌鬆散,沒有把 Benjamin 特別的一生表現出來,(編劇應該安排他有一些和一般人不同的作為?)感覺最後就只著重在他和女主角年齡漸行見遠的愛情,很有趣,但不夠深刻(整部片快三小時),不過也許很多人的一生也是這樣,放太多在愛情或其他事上面,而忘了想要成為一個怎麼樣的自己。這部片有點像是寓言故事,我很喜歡有一段凱特布蘭琪和布萊德彼特說他們交會在人生的正中點, 暗示著人生裡很多人事物的交會都只在剎那間。

【Yes Man】,典型的金凱瑞搞笑片,這部片在 weekday 還坐滿,看這種片好處是不需要認真聽就可以輕鬆 follow。看完的感想是,金凱瑞老了,皺紋好多,而且和一個年齡和他差很多女主角 Zooey Deschanel 搭配,不知道有沒有人覺得,這女生有點神似年輕的梅格萊恩,長得沒有非常像,不過她轉動眼睛時的講話神情一直讓我想到梅格萊恩。

最後看的一部【Revolutionary Road】有點看得莫名其妙,因為我把它和一部前幾個月上映的【Flash of Genius】搞混,所以打從片子一開始,我就一直覺得李奧納多會發明汽車相關的產品,然後專利被福特汽車偷走,接著李奧納多會告福特,拋家棄子離開凱特溫斯蕾(【Revolutionary Road】的 trailer 裡面是這些畫面啊!),展開多年的官司訴訟。結果電影看了一半他還沒發明半樣東西,他的公司說要引進計算機(背景是五零年代),我想說會不會是我搞錯他發明的產品,裡面李奧納多的角色一家人姓 Wheeler(車匠),所以我不死心地認為他的發明一定和車子相關。後來越看越不對勁,這完全就是部內心戲,講一對夫妻在夢想與現實中掙扎,我死撐到最後才終於放棄,承認我完全就是記錯,這部片跟發明一點關係都沒有,中文還翻【真愛旅程】,跟革命也沒什麼太大的關係,Revolutionary Road 只是他們住的地方的街名,頂多就是在講他們內心的革命。

結果我還沒看到舞台劇 Boeing Boeing,Bradley Whitford 就沒演了,現在他在劇中的花花公子角色 Bernard 由 Ally McBeal 裡頭那個好笑的律師事務所老闆之一 Richard Fish 接棒,

可以想見 Fish (從來記不得他叫什麼名字)應該也滿好笑的,可能比 BW 更適合搞笑,不過我從此就沒機會見到 BW 本人了。剛意外發現他好像開始拍新的電視影集 Off Duty。

Obama's Chief of Staff and the West Wing

之前討論過 Obama 和 The West Wing 裡頭拉丁裔總統候選人 Santos 在背景和風格等各方面都非常相似,後來從新聞裡也證實當初寫 Santos 這個角色時的確是參考當時只是伊利諾州議員的 Obama。除此之外,整個選戰從黨內對手 Hillary 到共和黨對手 McCain,都和 TWW 裡頭的佈局同出一轍,今天,又出現一個更誇張的相似點。

即將成為 Obama 的白宮幕僚長 - 伊利諾州眾議員 Rahm Emanuel,他曾經送一條死魚給一個惹毛他的民意調查員、他在中學時學過芭蕾舞 .....  TWW 劇中擔任 Santos Campaign 的 campaign manager 以及後來和他一起入主白宮擔任幕僚長的 Josh Lyman,也做過同樣的事,沒錯,Josh Lyman 這個角色從整齣劇一開始就是根據 Rahm Emanuel 寫出來的!(寫劇本的當時 Emanuel 應該是當柯林頓政府的政策顧問,Josh 一開始也是前民主黨總統的幕僚之一。)

我現在劇情和現實有時會錯亂,而且開始懷疑 Obama 完美的選戰打從一開始就是跟著劇本演的。如果真照著劇本演下去,John McCain 就即將成為下一任 Secretary of State 了。

舊戲新癮










最近對美國五零到七零年代美蘇冷戰時期為背景的電影很著迷,昨天看了關於古巴危機的【驚爆十三天】(Thirteen Days, 2000),上星期看了 Oliver Stone 以尼克森水門案為主題的【白宮風暴】(Nixon 1995)。

【白宮風暴】的主軸放在尼克森的政治生涯及水門事件,尤其著墨在他的成長背景與心理狀態,【驚爆十三天】描述約翰甘迺迪及其幕僚在一九六二年十月的十三天內,處理因蘇聯在古巴埋藏了飛彈所導致美蘇兩大強權關係緊繃,第三次世界大戰隨時可被引爆的全球恐慌,裡面滿有趣的一點是飾演甘迺迪核心幕僚的 Kevin Costner 的假愛爾蘭腔。看了 Nixon 和 Thirteen Days 之後,又很想知道甘迺迪兄弟被暗殺的始末,於是又預約了 Oliver Stone 的【誰殺了甘迺迪】(JFK 1991),這部片長三個多小時,Kevin Costner 演一名懷疑甘迺迪被暗殺是由政府陰謀主導的地方檢察官,電影後面他在法庭對陪審團講的一段話,很具爭議性但也很震撼人心,他說(節錄)
Tennyson wrote, Authority forgets a dying king... and this was never more true than for John F. Kennedy, whose murder was probably one the most terrible moments in the history of our country. You, the people, the jury system sitting in judgment on Clay Shaw, represent the hope of humanity against government power. In discharging your duty, in bringing the first conviction in this house of cards against Clay Shaw. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.... Do not forget your dying king. Show this world that this is still a government of the people, for the people, and by the people. Nothing as long as you live will ever be more important.... It's up to you.
這些片劇情虛實參半,不過很有戲劇張力。

看了這幾部電影讓我想念起幾年前很喜歡的電影【十月的天空】(October Sky 1999),講一個生長在五零年代西維吉尼亞礦區的少年追求火箭夢之路,以 NASA 工程師 Homer Hickam 回憶錄【火箭男孩】(Rocket Boys 1998) 改編,背景也是冷戰時期美蘇太空競賽,當時因為很喜歡這個故事,所以也買了原著來看,有空想來讀一下英文原版。

這幾天在看 Tom Hanks 導演的 HBO 迷你影集【飛向月球】(From the Earth, To the Moon 1998) ,這也是部很熱血的影集,回應之前 KA 說美國護照上面引用獨立宣言、馬丁路德等的做為背景圖案和文字,很有激勵人心的效果,護照最後一面是衛星和登入月球的圖案,整個就是很熱血,其中最喜歡的是引用獨立宣言裡頭的一段話:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

這段話我印象中 Obama 在某次演講裡也有引用,其實他會受到這麼多原本漠視政治的年輕族群支持,不就是重拾這些被遺忘的美國建國精神,讓人們的熱血沸騰起來嗎?

在看 Thirteen Days 時一直覺得演 Bobby Kennedy 的 Steven Culp 看起來很眼熟,但一直想不起來在哪裡看過,後來查了 imdb 之後才知道原來他是 The West Wing 第五季之後的 Republican House Speaker, Jeff Haffley。我好喜歡他演的 Robert Kennedy,查了 Robert Kennedy 的照片,發現他們兩個長得真是神似。
